    H. J. Bates, Maconian, Dies Sunday
    Farmer and Miner Was 81; Rites Held Monday
    Hannibal J. Bates, 81, died at his home in the Smith Bridge section early Sunday morning after a lingering illness.
    He was a native and lifelong resident of Macon County and was the son of late John Gray Bates and Mrs. Martha McClure Bates. Mr. Bates was married to Miss Octave Holbrooks on January 17, 1904, and was a member of the Coweeta Baptist Church. He was a farmer and miner.
    Services were held Monday at the Coweeta Baptist Church with the Rev. George A. Cloer officiating, assisted by the Rev. Benny Haire and the Rev. Clyde Monteith. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Leonard Meyers, Grady Williams, L. C. Knight, Roy Thomas, William Carpenter, and Romulus Carpenter.
    Surviving, in addition to the widow are a brother, Samuel M. Bates, of Darrington, Wash., and one sister, Mrs. J. E. Carpenter, of Toccoa, Ga.
    Potts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
