      Baby Saved by Grandmother
Home of Fred Rigel Damaged by Fire Yesterday
The baby of Mrs. Fred Rigel, wife of a blacksmith here who lives at 605 North Fourth Street was saved from a burning house yesterday afternoon when Mrs. Rigel's mother rushed into the burning house, wrapped the baby in a blanket and carried it out to safety.
Mrs. Rigel and her mother were out in the yard talking to a neighbor when they were warned that their house was on fire. The baby was brought out just before the roof fell in the hall.
The fire which resulted from a defective flue, left the walls badly charred in spite of the efforts of the fire department. Scarcely any of the furniture was saved, however, the loss is partly covered by insurance. The house was owned by Ned Gordon.

Thelma Mae Rigel had Huntington's Disease. This is a hereditary disease that is passed on from one of the parents. She died in 1980 at the age of 69 in the State Hospital in Fulton, Callaway County, Missouri after an extended stay.
She likely contracted this disease from her father Frederick Western Rigel (see his notes for more information). She unknowingly passed the disease on to her one and only child, Ethel Bernice Burks.
Description and Symptoms of Huntington's Disease:
Early symptoms of Huntington's Disease may affect cognitive ability or mobility and include depression, mood swings, forgetfulness, clumsiness, involuntary twitching and lack of coordination. As the disease progresses, concentration and short-term memory diminish and involuntary movements of the head, trunk and limbs increase. Walking, speaking and swallowing abilities deteriorate. Eventually the person is unable to care for him or herself. Death follows from complications such as choking, infection or heart failure.
Huntington's Disease typically begins in mid-life, between the ages of 30 and 50, though onset may occur as early as the age of two. Children who develop the juvenile form of the disease rarely live to adulthood.
Huntington's Disease affects males and females equally and crosses all ethnic and racial boundaries. Each child of a person with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the fatal gene. Everyone who carries the gene will develop the disease.
Huntington's Disease does not "skip" generations.
